INSULATED: integrated solution for lean and abridged thermal evaluation with digital twins

Total: 317’814 CHF — Innosuisse applied research grant.

The aim of this project is to improve buildings’ energy consumption at large scale thanks to a tool guiding retrofit actions. The research is on multi-sensor 3D modeling and prediction of retrofit actions. The results of this project are applied to building renovation.

  • Principal investigators: Dr Malcolm Mielle and Prof Olga Fink (EPFL)
  • Partners: Schindler, EPFL
  • My contribution: initial idea, draft of the proposal (research and business plan), finding collaborators.

Research outcomes: ThermoNeRF, Thermoxels, BuildNet3D, PINN-it, SEAR, and FORGE-SIM — see INSULATED project page for the full picture.

Safety Coach

Total: 269’334 CHF — Innosuisse applied research grant.

The aim of this project is to enhance safety with an AI-based system using wearable sensors. This system detects worker activities via deep learning and provides focused alerts, reducing accidents, promoting safety and innovation.

  • Principal investigators: Dr Malcolm Mielle, Dr Anisoara Ionescu (EPFL), Prof Andres Perez-Uribe (HEIG-VD)
  • Partners: Schindler, EPFL, HEIG-VD
  • My contribution: initial idea, draft of the proposal (research and business plan), finding collaborators.

Research outcomes: UAC (uncertainty-aware calibration for gesture detection) and D-CAT (multimodal training with unimodal deployment) — see Safety Coach project page.
